Must-try foods on your next Austria trip

Updated: Jun 10, 2020

I tried 4 authentic Austrian delicacies in the 4-day trip last summer and I can safely say that the country's cuisine is massively underrated. Apart from Schnitzel, not many people know what the city offers in terms of food.

1. Wiener Schnitzel: The world-famous Wiener Schnitzel is a fried piece of meat traditionally made with veal, served with a side of potato salad. This is comfort food at its finest. The crunchiness of breadcrumbs filled with the chewy piece of meat is finger-licking good.

2. WürstelI (Viennese Sausage): I fell in love with the authentic Viennese sausage the moment I took my first bite. It's Vienna's street food and you'll find stalls selling this at almost every street in Vienna's old town. Combine it with a chilled glass of beer and you're good.

3. Sachertorte: Austria's most famous Chocolate cake. What makes it different from any other chocolate cake is the layer of apricot jam that's added in between the layers. While it may look a bit dull and dry at first, but you dig into your first bite and then it's hard to stop. Pro tip: A lot of places might claim to serve the original Sachertorte, but I recommend having it only from the Sacher Hotel.

4. Apfelstrudel: Apple strudel is as important in Austria as apple crumble is in the UK. It's a flaky pastry filled with apples and cinnamon served with either ice-cream or vanilla sauce. I was born with sweet tooth and this was my comfort food.
